I contemplated on whether I should write this post. Yesterday, I had lunch with a good friend of mine. She revealed to me that someone very close to her (also known to me) has bowel cancer. She has only just recently celebrated her 50th birthday.

Bowel cancer used to be referred to as an ‘old person’s’ disease. It’s the one type of cancer that can be prevented by following a healthy lifestyle through healthy eating and exercise (and I believe a healthy emotional state).

I now know of a number of young people that have/had this disease. It took the life of my best friend just over 20 years ago. She was only 24 years old.

Any type of cancer diagnosis breaks my heart. Bowel cancer is preventable. Please everyone, I urge you to start watching what you put in your mouth. Packaged food is generally not ‘real food’. Junk food, unhealthy oils and sugar are several things that are devoid of nutrients – nutrients that your body so desperately needs, and this seriously affects your immune system.

Over the years, I’ve heard so many people say ‘oh, but I eat healthy’, but when we take a closer look into their diet, this isn’t the case. A lot of them were shocked that what they thought was healthy, in fact, wasn’t.

A healthy diet, healthy emotional state, and keeping the body moving are important in preventing this disease. There are also bowel cancer test kits available for early detection.

There are plenty of food coaches around, including myself, or nutritionists that can help guide you to making healthier food choices for you and your family. You’re not alone, so seek some help. Prevention is key. This disease can now affect anyone of any age. The next step is up to you.

In good health always,

Carmen.
