Self-motivation is an important part of life. Despite challenges with not feeling motivated, we can still persevere.

Truth is, we’re always faced with unexpected events. These incidents can throw us off balance, depending on how we react to them.

Try these tips to increase your motivation:

1. Set goals. One of the key reasons for feeling demotivated is simply because we don’t know where we want to go. Why do you wake up each morning and go to work? What do you want your life to look like in the coming year; two years; five years? Why do you want your life to look that way?

  • Asking yourself these questions can help you gain a clear objective about where you want to go. Once you have answers to these questions, you can effectively set the right goals for you.

2. Stop comparing yourself to others. Truth is, no-one’s perfect. But we forget this when we compare ourselves to others, thinking we have to somehow ‘match’ them or do better than them. This type of thinking can lead to more stress and depression.

  • So, instead of comparing yourself to others, try imagining what your life will be like when you achieve your goals. Taking this approach can help free yourself from the endless lists and mental comparisons that get in the way of your progress.

3. Face your problems. We all have challenges in our lives, and it can be easy to have negative thoughts and emotions. Instead of abandoning your goals, try to clarify each of your issues and then work out what you can do about them.

  • Your challenges may feel like a huge obstacle, but giving up on your dreams is a much bigger deal.

  • Remember why you started. Recognise that results don’t happen instantly. Stay motivated and focused toward your goal.

4. Allow your choices to differ from past choices. Although we don’t generally like change, sometimes, that’s what we need. You don’t have to make huge changes to your life. Instead, you can make small changes that lead to significant results.

  • For example, someone trying to lose weight might choose to eat healthier and include more daily movement.

  • Ultimately, your outcomes are a result of your decisions, so make wise choices!

5. Embrace your mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes, even if we’re doing the best that we can. Learn from your mistakes and move on. Recognise that mistakes are what makes us human.

  • Even the most successful people have made poor decisions at some point. The reality is that mistakes help us to learn and grow. They allow us to learn new skills and improve our behaviours.

  • So instead of dwelling on your mistakes, evaluate them and think about what you did well. By doing this, you’ll learn from your mistakes and achievements, and subsequently make you more motivated.

It’s easy to feel demotivated. However, the key to staying motivated is to focus on the big picture.

Even though it’s possible that you may never reach some goals, if you focus on the possibilities and put in your best effort to meet them, you can still achieve your dreams no matter how difficult they may be.
